On Monday, officials from the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) stated that they have started an investigation against 14 state medical councils and 73 foreign medical graduates who were allowed to practice medicine in India without qualifying for the mandatory Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (FMGE).
To obtain provisional or permanent registration with the National Medical Commission or a state, the foreign medical graduate must pass the FMGE/Screening Test administered by the National Board of Examination.
The officials stated that they registered after the National Board of Examination intimated to the Ministry of Health. According to the report sent by the board, 73 medical graduates who did their MBBS were from foreign countries such as Russia, Ukraine, China, and Nigeria between 2011 and 2022. The report stated that these individuals did not pass the examination, yet they got registration from various state medical councils.
